Cover photograph for Sporta Brochure: which one would you choose? Cover A or cover B?

As a photographer, trying to satisfy the needs of your clients, it is sometimes a difficult exercise to meet your clients view with your own. However, as a professional photographer, creating images that have a high impact, you want to deliver photographs that your clients can use and not only what you think your client should use.

During the assignment for Sporta – a centre that provides training facilities for all sorts of athletes in varying disciplines – I photographed many setups and situations, one of which we thought would be useful for the cover of the brochure. But when it eventually came down to choosing the cover photograph, it proved to be more difficult than expected.

My opinion was fairly clear from the start on how I saw the cover photograph (but my opinion doesn’t count), but even the art-director’s opinion wasn’t 100% on par with the opinion of the board of directors.

Eventually, the art director came up with 2 versions of the cover, which are listed below.

Which one would you choose and why? Cover A or Cover B?

Voor de 4de keer hebben Piet van den Eynde van “MoreThanWords” en mezelf met succes de workshop flitsfotografie en lightroom georganiseerd (From speedlight to lightroom), waar we de basisbeginselen van flitsfotografie op locatie, alsook een initiatie Lightroom3 geven.

Piet neemt in de namiddag vooral het gedeelte “Lightroom3″ op zich – Piet is expert, expert en euh … expert op het vlak van lightroom, en bij uitbreiding beeldverwerking”, waar ik in hoofdzaak het woord neem bij het eerste gedeelte van de dag, namelijk het “speedlight” gedeelte, oftwel het gedeelte waarin toegelicht wordt hoe je met losse reportageflitsen (die dingen op batterijen, dus geen studio flitsen) op locatie toch beelden kan maken die het gemiddelde ver overstijgen.

Voor de eerste keer echter werd deze workshop tijdens een weekdag georganiseerd, waardoor we al gauw volgeboekt waren met collega fotografen uit de 4 windstreken van het land (van Kortemark tot Tongeren ….). In tegenstelling tot de vorige workshop zijn we deze keer niet zo heel lang moeten blijven stilstaan bij sluitertijd, diafragma en ISO, maar konden we vrij snel tot de essentie van de zaak overgaan. Aan de hand van een heel aantal portfoliobeelden – beelden die ik in de afgelopen 6 maanden voor klanten gemaakt heb – bespraken we hoe die beelden gemaakt zijn, wat de plaats van de lichten was, welke hulpmiddelen ik gebruikte, wat de camera instellingen waren, wat de moeilijkheden waren bij het fotograferen (en hoe ze opgelost werden), etc ….

Na deze interactieve bespreking, die heel veel vragen losweekte en die ons toeliet om een verscheidenheid aan technieken te illustreren en te becommentariëren, trokken we het “veld” in voor een oefensessie – een “hands-on” workshop. Eerst werd daarbij geïllustreerd hoe je op locatie tewerk moet gaan wanneer je met reportageflitsen een portret wil maken. Daarbij kwamen zowel camerainstellingen aan bod, als hoe je flitsen instellen, hoe je flitsen aansturen, het gebruik van softboxen en kleurenfilters, etc …. workshop flitsofotografie & Lightroom

Na een paar setups namen Piet en mezelf dan de cursisten “bij het handje” om zelf een paar setup te laten uitvoeren, waardoor de praktische vragen naar boven begonnen komen.

Uiteindelijk eindigden we de fotosessie met een heel aantal diverse beelden op onze kaartjes, en keerden we terug voor een middagmaal waar we de shoot besproken.

Ondertussen haalde Piet alle foto’s van alle deelnemers binnen in Lightroom en gebruikte die dan voor de namiddagsessie, om aan de hand van die foto’s een initiatie over Lightroom3 te kunnen geven. Zo konden de deelnemers aan de workshop ogenblikkelijk het resultaat van hun noeste arbeid in de voormiddag bekijken, kregen ze ogenblikkelijk een zicht op hoe snel de workflow binnen Lightroom werkt en hoe de reeds mooie beelden op een heel snelle manier gecatologeerd, geordend, bewerkt en geëxporteerd kunnen worden.

Om een en ander te verduidelijken volgt hieronder dan een bloemlezing van een aantal beelden die ik gisteren maakte.

What do photographers earn?

What do you earn as a photographer?

Well, that depends upon the angle you look at it.

As a freelancer, earning a living out of making photographs, I would welcome Euros, Dollars, Pounds and even Yenn or Ruble would do, thank you.

As an amateur, you’re probably very happy with any kind of publication in virtually any type of magazine in return of credits (which is, believe me, nothing to impress your bank manager when it comes to paying your mortgage)

Or for the aspiring photographer, you may well be happy with any kind of encouragement, friendly words or pat-on-the-back type thing.

Well, let me tell you, I was recently comissioned to photograph the person in charge of a company that imports grape fruit. After it had taken me quite some effort to convince the person that I was there to photograph him – and not the stacks of grape fruit in the depot – he finally started to co-operate. I set up two stands with a Nikon SB900 speedlight, triggered with Nikon CLS system (on-camera speedlight on a D3s). I underexposed the atmosphere in the depot, because it had the horrible neon -fluorescent lights which turns everything – and everyone – green. Not something to brag about. I had one light – standing at the far end of the lane of crates – lighting the creates in the background, and one light through an umbrella on the person to photograph. Easy setup that works well – and fast!

But then it happened, when after the shoot was finished, he presented me with the very same piece of grape fruit he was holding during the photo shoot.

So, when you pose that question about houw much photographers do earn, remember that it can be anything from cold cash, through respect, credits and sometimes …. grapefruit.

Architectural photography

It shouldn’t be a big surprise that a construction engineer-turned-photographer is still in love with building and architecture. Indeed, one of my main interests in photography lies in architectural photography. I can always enjoy good architectural photography and I strive to, when I’m photographing buildings and architecture, seek interesting angles, compostions and colors.

One of my clients designs brochures for Philips Lighting and upon completion of a project, I’m comissioned to photograph the building with the integrated lighting.

When the new building for Mercedes in Brussels was finished, I had to photograph the interior of the building, which needed to show its lighting. It finally ended up in print as follows.

Photography and pregnancy, a match made in heaven!

As a photographer, one of the most beautiful things to photograph is a pregnant womam. Woman in itself are already beautiful (man too, but that’s a different story alltogether), but a pregnant woman is a pleasure to photograph and to look at. Most of the times, when pregnancy goes well, these woman are so proud of their little bundle of joy inside their body, that they come accross on photographs in a self-confident way.

It wasn’t any different with this lady, who I photographed in her own house. Photographing a belly on location, that is in the comfort and cosyness of someone’s own house, holds many advantages. The pregnant lady doesn’t have to move herself towards a photo studio, but she can stay in a well-known environment, which ultimately helps to gain even more confidence to pose for photographs. In order to explore the through possibilities of pregnancy photography, often people want photographs of the naked body (which, indeed, shows the changing outlines of the body very well). But as you will see in the photographs below, it doesn’t always have to be naked.

With the help of a black background, which I brought along, and a few of-camera reportage flashes (type Nikon SB900) I created different images. In order to respect the privacy of everyone involved, I can only show a few images, but they serve to prove my point. Woman are beautiful, pregnant woman are stunning!

Guerilla event photography for Play Station’s Heavy Rain

Recently I was commisioned to photograph a guerilla event in Brussel. The aim was to capture the mood of a “film noir” of people walking through pooring rain. The rain was created by a rain machine. People leaving Brussels north railway station were given an umbrella in order to keep dry through the heavy rain, created by the rain machine. They had to walk towards me whilst looking into the camera.
The lights we used were cinematographic floodlights (2 times 2000W and 2 times 1000W) and were positioned in such a way that the rain was visible in the photograph.

The event took only about an hour during which time had quite a number of people walking through the heavy rain.

Using a Nikon D3s, wich is a camera designed to use in the field in the most difficult circumstances, I was able to capture the images using a 70-200mm lens at ISO3200.

The photograph used for the press release was choosen by the advertising agency and was used to promote the release of the new game.

High ISO photography – Nikon D3s

It was somewhere deep in december of 2009 when a courrier service brought a small parcel, rather unexpectedly. I had ordered my new camera, a Nikon D3s a couple of weeks before, but they shop couldn’t tell me when they would be able to deliver. In fact, Nikon couldn’t even tell.

Nevertheless, my camera stayed unboxed for a week due to my full scedule, but I had some time on my hands just before Christmas to read the manual. Shortly thereafter I started using my Nikon D3s on assignments.

We’ve now been together for 2 months and I must say that it’s again a pleasure to work the Nikon D3s. Not that it’s much different from the Nikon D3, which I’ve been using for the past 2 years. It has the same amount of pixels, it’s housed in the same rigid body and has the same “look and feel” as the Nikon D3. But, it can shoot HD video (says the manual) and can work at high ISO settings such as 6400, 12800, 25600, 51200 and even 102400!

Sure enough, this assignment came along whereby I had to photograph two toddlers at school for the cover of a magazine. There were two restrictions, 1. don’t force the children into doing something they don’t like and 2. don’t use flash.

I started out at ISO 6400 but realised quickly that is was still to low (you want the histogram to be on the right side, not the left) so I changed to ISO 12800. Even at these settings I had to use f/3.5 and 1/40th as a setting on the camera.

These are the shots that came out of it. OK, they are not as sharp as ISO200, but they were more than acceptable for usage in print.

Ergens midden december vorig jaar moet het geweest zijn. ‘k Had hem al een tijdje besteld, maar wist helemaal niet wanneer hij zou komen. Bij Nikon zwijgen ze zoals steeds in alle talen, waardoor mijn leverancier evenmin kon zeggen wanneer het zou komen. Tot er op een mooie dag aangebeld werd met een pakje van een courierdienst. Bleek de levering van mijn Nikon D3s te zijn, het paradepaardje van Nikon wat betreft sport en reportagefotografie.

Omdat december zo onwezenlijk druk was, heeft het toestel hier zeker een week gestaan zonder één klik, maar in de kerstvakantie deed ik er al mijn eerste opdracht mee.

Nu, na ongeveer 2 maanden, zijn we beste maatjes en beginnen we elkaar steeds beter te leren kennen. Eigenlijk is er niet zo heel veel verschil tussen de D3s en zijn voorganger, de D3. Evenveel pixels, zelfde bouw, zelfde gevoel. Maar het kan wel in HD films opnemen (zegt de handleiding) en heeft heel wat meer ISO’s dan de D3. Nog meer dan de D3.

Zo kan de D3s gemakkelijk ISO 6400 aan, en 12 800 is ook mogelijk. Nog te weinig licht? Ga dan naar 25600, 51200 of (bij zonsverduistering, nieuwe maan, of in de donkere dagen voor kerstmis) zet hem gewoon op 102400.

En jawel, vorige week moest ik een foto maken van twee kleuters in een schooltje. Maar er waren 2 beperkingen. Ten eerste, ik mocht de kleuters niet storen en ten tweede, ik mocht geen flits gebruiken.

De lichtomstandigheden in de klas waren niet ideaal. Ik begon eerst op ISO 6400, maar omdat je beter een beetje “naar rechts” belicht, zette ik de ISO al snel op 12800, wetende dat het beeld voor een cover moest dienen.

Ik moet toegeven dat het beeld niet zo “scherp” is als op ISO 200, maar zonder flits was het in deze omstandigheden niet eens mogelijk geweest een bruikbaar beeld te maken, wetende dat ik onderstaand beeld op f/3.5 bij 1/40ste gefotografeerd heb. Zet dat maar eens om naar ISO 200 (komt ongeveer overeen met 2 seconden belichten op ISO 200)!

Niettemin, hierboven het resultaat. ‘t Zal u wellicht niet verbazen dat we goede maatjes geworden zijn met de D3s ….

Flash some light into your photographs

A while ago I was comissioned to photograph a car – a viper – at the Zolder/Terlaemen cuircuit. The photograph was to be used at the Brussels Motor Show and had to be printed billboard size.

The client first asked to photograph the car – and his driver – in the pitlane. But with the background available, there was no way we would be able to get a great photograph out of it in the short amount of time that was allotted to me.

So I suggested we’d redo that shot on the circuit, ensuring the background would be less cluttered. That resulted in this shot.

I had a few minutes spare (my time was restricted due to the fact that soon enough cars would start racing on the circuit) so I suggested I’d light the image differently. So I took out a few Nikon SB900 strobes, lit the car, underexposed the sky which resulted in this images – which pleased the client.

Welgeteld 1 uur kreeg ik. 60 minuten, dat is de eeuwigheid waarin er op een doordeweekse dag de wagens rusten op het circuit van Zolder.

Ik moest er zijn om een beeld te maken dat later zou gebruikt worden als groot beeld bij een stand op het autosalon.

De foto moest de auto tonen van het KRK racing team met Jeffrey Van Hooydonck, maar waar ook Kris en Koen Wauters aan mee doen. Men wou graag een foto van Jeffrey aan de wagen (een Viper, voor de kenners) in de “pitlane”. Als de klant dat vraagt, dan kan de klant dat krijgen, en maakte daarbij de foto “Image with natural light in the pitlane”.

Ik heb even getwijfeld om deze foto te tonen, want in mijn ogen is die saai, zitten er geen mooie kleuren in en is de achtergrond, wel, euh, een beetje storend. Maar niettemin, dit is wat de klant wou en dus kreeg.

Omdat ik nog een half uurtje had, suggereerden we een foto op het circuit. Men deed daar een beetje zenuwachtig over, want als het uur om is, dan racen de wagens – zonder verwittiging.

Ik beloofde op mijn communiezieltje dat we op tijd gingen weg zijn.

Eerst maakte ik een beeld met gelijkaardige belichting, waardoor de sfeer van het beeld helemaal hetzelfde bleef. Enkel de achtegrond vond ik beter. Maar niet goed genoeg. Zie foto “Car on circuit with natural light”.

Om die reden vroeg ik nog of ik de laatste 10 minuten mocht gebruiken voor mijn visie op de foto. Dat mocht, dus plaatste ik een paar flitsjes om de auto en Jeffey te belichten en als dusdanig wat meer datail in de achtergrond – die uit grijze lucht bestond – te krijgen.

Het resultaat daarvan kan je zien in “Car lit by two speedlights”. Het beeld is veel dynamischer, de kleuren zijn mooier, …. en de klant viel plat achterover!

… en zo kwam het dat een beeld van deze serie het daglicht zag op het autosalon.

Na het laatste beeld duwden we de wagen weer snel de pitlane in en een paar ogenblikken later scheurden de bolides weer over het circuit. En de fotograaf, die reed op cruise control terug naar huis, …

Studio photoshoot – Large group portrait

I was recently contacted by a family who asked me if they could have their portraits taken, as well as a group photograph, in order to have a beautiful surprise gift for their mums’ 50th birthday. They would be 5, 4 sons and the father.

They wanted a group photograph in the studio, against a white background and they wanted to dress up for the occasion.

Having a rather small home studio, which has served me well so far, I was a little tense and I was prepared to photograph every family member on his own in order to photoshop them all into one image. However, always being up for a challange, I tried to photograph them together in one shot.

When they arrived at the studio, they all got dressed into these very smart dresses (some of them had difficulties getting into their trousers, but eventually every one managed to get fully dressed).

I managed to position them in such a way that they looked well, that the image was interesting to look at and that everyone somewhat showed his personality. Than, the biggest problem with such a group shot lies in lighting them all evenly, which, in a small studio, is not easy. In order to do so I used only one studio light, placed behind a huge softbox that I created out of translucent material. The total area of this material is about 4 square meter (roughly 6 foot by 6 foot). In doing so, I created a large lightsource, which results in an even illumination of the subject whilst still creating enough contrast.

The background was lit by a background reflector, so I used 2 studio lights in total. This is the result, which finally got printed on canvas at 1m by 1.50m.

Portrait photography – on location shoot with Myrte – part 3: flashlight

This is the last post of the shoot with Myrte on location (a field at midday in bright sunlight).

After having used flaslight to brighten up the shadow side of Myrte and to balance it against the harsh sunlight coming from the back, I wanted a few shots of her where the flashlight became the predominant light, hence underexposing the sunlight. This would give a totally different feel to the image than what we saw in the previous posts.

In order to do so I had to set the flashlight to almost full power so that the flash could overpower the sun. Using f/14 at 250 I dialed in an exposure setting into my camera that effectively would create an underexposed image, but the use of the flashlight added enough light on Myrte to get a correctly exposed image on her.

The result was about 1 usable photograph because Myrte got bored of being a model and wanted to enter her airy fairy princess world …..
