Studio photoshoot – Large group portrait

14 September 2009 om 15:59 door Jürgen geplaatst in de categorie Commercial,Portrait,Studio

I was recently contacted by a family  who asked me if they could have their portraits taken, as well as a group photograph, in order to have a beautiful surprise gift for their mums’ 50th birthday.  They would be 5, 4 sons and the father.

They wanted a group photograph in the studio, against a white background and they wanted to dress up for the occasion.

Having a rather small home studio, which has served me well so far, I was a little tense and I was prepared to photograph every family member on his own in order to photoshop them all into one image.  However, always being up for a challange, I tried to photograph them together in one shot.

When they arrived at the studio, they all got dressed into these very smart dresses (some of them had difficulties getting into their trousers, but eventually every one managed to get fully dressed).

I managed to position them in such a way that they looked well, that the image was interesting to look at and that everyone somewhat showed his personality.  Than, the biggest problem with such a group shot lies in lighting them all evenly, which, in a small studio, is not easy.  In order to do so I used only one studio light, placed behind a huge softbox that I created out of translucent material.  The total area of this material is about 4 square meter (roughly 6 foot by 6 foot).  In doing so, I created a large lightsource, which results in an even illumination of the subject whilst still creating enough contrast.

The background was lit by a background reflector, so I used 2 studio lights in total.  This is the result, which finally got printed on canvas at 1m by 1.50m.

Cover shoot for Brico Magazine

12 August 2009 om 19:20 door Jürgen geplaatst in de categorie Commercial,Portrait

As a freelance photographer you need to be able to do all kind of assignments.  This time I had to shoot a cover for a magazine for a Leuven based advertising agency (Head Office).

They wanted a shot that showed a wendy house in the back, a lovely woman in the front and ample space around it for the header as well as for the text on the cover page.

Although it was a very bright day I used a Nikon SB900 with a 1/2 CTO gel, shot through an umbrella and triggered by pocket wizards.  By doing so I was able to put a

bit of extra warmth into the subject as well as give a catchlight in her glasses, which adds a bit of a spark to the image.  We shot her in different setups using mainly a long lens (70 – 210). This particular shot I used a 125mm focal length at 1/125 at f/8.

Salsa!

18 May 2009 om 15:41 door Jürgen geplaatst in de categorie Commercial,Flashlight,Portrait,Uncategorized

For Linea Recta Media, a Dutch media agency specialised in corporate magazines (amongst other things) commissioned me to do a shoot of a girl who does salsa dancing.

The editor wanted a full length photograph of the girl dancing alone and dancing with a partner, with her face visible (or at least recognisable to the readers of the corporate magazine, in this case One! for Unilever Benelux).

In order to do so we met on a Sunday evening in “La Tentation“, a Brussels centre for dancecourses where we set up for the shoot. During the shoot, the salsa dance was in full swing, with litteraly thens of people dancing the night away.

As it was impossible to obtain the desired images with dancing people around my dancer, we had to move to a corner in the room.  Another problem is the fact that you cannot just photograph people and publisch them in a corporate magazine.  Should you want to do this, you would need a model release from everybody present in the room, which is practically impossible.

For the shoot I used two Nikon SB900 speedlights with a full CTO color filter, in order to balance for the avaible (warm) light in the room.  I also used a long lens (2.8 70-200mm VR ) and shot at high ISO levels in order to capture the ambient light.  My settings were ISO 3200, f/5.6 at 1/50sec.

Using the speedlights I was able to sculpture the lights on my model without altering the light on the background.  I used two stands to put on my flashlights and angled the at about 30° towards the dancer.  The lefthandside speedlight was about 1 stop brighter than the righthandside speedlight (in order to keep depth and dimension in the face).

Portrait photography – on location shoot with Myrte – part 3: flashlight

om 11:25 door Jürgen geplaatst in de categorie Flashlight, kids,Portrait

This is the last post of the shoot with Myrte on location (a field at midday in bright sunlight).

After having used flaslight to brighten up the shadow side of Myrte and to balance it against the harsh sunlight coming from the back, I wanted a few shots of her where the flashlight became the predominant light, hence underexposing the sunlight.  This would give a totally different feel to the image than what we saw in the previous posts.

In order to do so I had to set the flashlight to almost full power so that the flash could overpower the sun.  Using f/14 at 250 I dialed in an exposure setting into my camera that effectively would create an underexposed image, but the use of the flashlight added enough light on Myrte to get a correctly exposed image on her.

The result was about 1 usable photograph because Myrte got bored of being a model and wanted to enter her airy fairy princess world …..

New Blog – What’s up?

27 April 2009 om 11:06 door Jürgen geplaatst in de categorie Graphic Design

Well, what’s going to happen with this blog I hear you ask?

Since a site is rather static and since new content (ie “images”) are being generated all the time, a blog is the perfect companion to a site.  On this blog I will post new images, insights in photography, tips and trics, announcements of upcoming events such as workshops and everything that is (even remotely) related to my photographic carreer.

A blog can be a long and interesting journey, sometimes with long and winding roads, uphill, in bad weather.  But I hope that staying with me will be rewarding.

I look forward to a long journey, hopefully with you as well!
